As the judicial process kicks off, citizens who long for a return to safety and accountability are left hoping that the suspect gets the punishment he deserves.

Virgil Thew, a name now notorious in the state of Wisconsin, was captured in Elroy, merely 12 to 13 miles from the New Lisbon crime scene.

Law enforcement discovered the bodies of Elizabeth Kolba, aged 33, and two young girls, aged 12 and 13, on December 30.

Their killings left the community in disbelief, heightening emotions and the need for justice, reports The Wisconsin State Journal.

Thew’s charges are severe, facing three counts of first-degree intentional homicide.

This grave situation, compounded by the fact that Thew knew the victims, presents a tapestry of questions that residents of New Lisbon are eager to have answered.

He had been last seen on January 1 near New Lisbon, according to surveillance footage from a trail camera.

Through relentless efforts and a zealous determination to rectify these heinous acts, combined forces of local and federal law enforcement, including the FBI, executed a search operation for Thew.

Tips and leads generously provided by citizens were vital, with authorities receiving 172 actionable tips about Thew’s whereabouts before his eventual capture. A crucial reminder of why community involvement is essential.

“We appreciate the public’s assistance in providing tips that contributed to the successful resolution of this matter,” the police said.

The location of the tragic crime that unfolded just after Christmas was Thew’s mother’s house in New Lisbon.

Charges against Thew were officially filed on January 3, marking the transition from manhunt to trial.

The quick legal move was necessary to secure the path toward holding him accountable in the courts.

Authorities, through a post on the Juneau County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, expressed appreciation for the community’s support during these turbulent times.

As the New Lisbon community steels itself for what’s to come, there is an undercurrent of hope that peace will again take root.

“The New Lisbon Police Department and Juneau County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the families affected by this tragic incident,” said New Lisbon Police chief Kyle Walker.
