Immigration enforcement operations have begun across multiple cities, marking the start of mass deportations under President Trump, primarily targeting migrants with criminal backgrounds.
ICE, reportedly under pressure, announced 956 arrests on a single Sunday, the largest number to date.
Each field office has been given a quota of at least 75 arrests per day.
To support these efforts, ICE has about 5,500 officers nationwide dedicated to immigration enforcement.
Acting DHS Secretary Benjamine Huffman has also rescinded a directive that previously prevented ICE enforcement at sensitive locations like schools and churches.
This decision signals a significant escalation in enforcement activities across the nation.
“We’ve got to put America’s safety first,” declared Trump’s border czar Tom Homan, NBC News reports.
The targeted operations could potentially occur in sanctuary cities, where federal and local authorities remain at odds.
Cities such as Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles have been identified as potential targets, challenging local officials who have vowed to protect immigrant communities.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson confirmed local police were not involved in the enforcement activities.
These operations are not without controversy.
The American Civil Liberties Union is challenging the expanded expedited removal rule in court, claiming it leads to quick deportations without proper legal proceedings.
Furthermore, ICE operations have reportedly detained U.S. citizens, raising questions about the risk of civil rights violations.
“The aperture right now is constrained to public safety threats, national security threats as a smaller population,” Homan said, cited by Fox News.
ICE’s strategy includes enlisting the assistance of other federal agencies to enforce immigration laws.
Homeland Security Investigations in Miami, in collaboration with entities like the FBI, has expanded these efforts.
Trump officials issue quotas to ICE officers to ramp up arrests
The administration wants to increase the number of arrests from a few hundred per day to at least 1,200 to 1,500, increasing the chances that non-criminals will be detained.https://t.co/Go7YI9zNsp pic.twitter.com/ZhxPEnKPGn— Harris Meyer (@Meyer_HM) January 27, 2025
