(ReclaimingAmerica.net) – BREAKING NOW: Just moments ago, Florida’s Republican-led Senate approved a bill to eliminate The Walt Disney Company’s special tax district, which has allowed it to self-govern its land.
As it stands currently, this special tax district gives Disney broad autonomy. It also grants it control over the local police and fire departments in the area where its theme park is located in Orlando, Florida. According to the Wall Street Journal, it saves the company millions each year by exempting them from different regulations, taxes, and fees.
Ron DeSantis, the Republican Governor of Florida, announced Tuesday that lawmakers would “consider terminating all special districts in Florida that were established prior to 1968 — including the Reedy Creek Improvement District.”
The Senate passed the legislation by a vote total of 23-16. It would end the arrangement in June 2023. It would impact approximately six districts within the state. The Journal reported that Reedy Creek was the only one connected to Disney.
The Florida House is expected to easily pass the legislation and send it to Governor DeSantis for his signature and implementation.
Meanwhile, Colorado’s Governor Jared Polis, a Democrat, has invited Disney to move to Colorado, where he says the government won’t interfere with its operations in the way that the Republicans in Florida are planning, according to Polis.
