The attack reportedly occurred during a dispute with another inmate at the United States Penitentiary Coleman II. Nassar was stabbed multiple times, sustaining injuries to his back and chest.
Following immediate medical attention, he is currently in stable condition.
Nassar’s conviction revolves around the abuse of multiple gymnasts over his career span, including members of the U.S. Olympic team. Over 300 women and girls, including celebrated Olympians Aly Raisman and Simone Biles, came forward to accuse the former Michigan State University sports doctor.
These survivors recounted Nassar’s pattern of abuse under the pretense of providing medical treatment, which dates back decades.
Nassar admitted to assaulting athletes at the university and USA Gymnastics, an organization that trains Olympians. This admission led to multiple prison sentences in both state and federal courts.
In January 2018, Michigan Judge Rosemarie Aquilina presided over Nassar’s case. Addressing Nassar, she declared it was her “honor and privilege to sentence” him to 40 to 175 years in prison. “I just signed your death warrant,” she added. “You do not deserve to walk outside a prison ever again.”
Nassar was also sentenced in a separate trial involving abuses at the Twistars Gymnastics Club in Dimondale, Michigan. More than 65 women gave impact statements during this trial. In an intense moment, a father of three daughters, all victims of Nassar, attempted to attack him in court.
Additionally, Nassar received a 60-year sentence in federal prison on charges involving obscene photos of children. He was arrested by the Michigan State police in 2016, although the university faced criticism for its purported failure to intervene earlier, resulting in a $500 million settlement with Nassar’s victims.
USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee also faced backlash for neglecting to protect young athletes from Nassar’s predatory behavior. They ultimately agreed to a $380 million settlement in response to their failure.
