Trump denied any wrongdoing on his part and said he would refuse to answer questions — citing his Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate himself — asked by the New York attorney general about his business dealings.
As the New York Post lays it out in, “Donald Trump refuses to answer questions by AG James, claims he ‘did nothing wrong'”:
“Former President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he refused to answer questions from New York prosecutors — led by State Attorney General Letitia James — about his resort and real estate businesses.
“‘I declined to answer the questions under the rights and privileges afforded to every citizen under the United States Constitution,’ Trump said in a statement, referring to the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.” [emphasis added]
For his critics, who quickly noted that Trump has always said that only the guilty take the Fifth, Trump had a prepared response.
“I once asked, ‘If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?’ Now I know the answer to that question. When your family, your company, and all the people in your orbit have become the targets of an unfounded, politically motivated Witch Hunt supported by lawyers, prosecutors, and the Fake News Media, you have no choice.”
In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump accused New York State Attorney General Letitia James of being a “racist.”
