(ReclaimingAmerica.net) – Abortion pills are the most common method for ending the life of unborn infants in the United States, reveals a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
About 51% of all abortions are performed using the abortion pill named mifepristone or mifeprex, which is taken at or before the ninth week of pregnancy, shows the report cited by Newsmax.
At the same time, about 40% of abortions were performed surgically at or before the 13th week of pregnancy.
The CDC study also found that the sales of abortion pills grew by 22% in 2020, during the most extensive COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns, compared with 2019.
The CDC compiled the report based on data predating the June 2022 ruling of the US Supreme Court in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which allowed state abortion bans by overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.
“[This suggests] the CDC’s subsequent studies for 2021 and 2022 could provide a greater disparity of the abortion pill’s popularity among women,” Newsmax commented.
The report also shows that the usage of abortion pills has spiked by 154% between 2011 and 2020.
At least 12 states have introduced abortion bans since the June ruling of the US Supreme Court. However, banning the abortion pill appears to be more difficult because it is relatively easy to get.
That has mainly been the case since, during the coronavirus pandemic, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ended a requirement that women obtain the abortion pill in person. The measure was made permanent in December 2021, which led to more online and by-mail pill purchases.
Pro-life advocates filed a suit last week asking a Texas federal court to overturn the FDA’s approval of mifepristone.
At the same time, a group of Democrat US Senators led by progressivist Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts petitioned the FDA to approve the abortion pill for use as a miscarriage management drug.
The FDA has said that combining mifepristone with the tablet misoprostol has “garnered approval for attempting to terminate pregnancies before the 10th week,” CNBC reported.
The abortion pill prevents the continuation of the pregnancy, while the latter leads to “contractions that empty the uterus.”
The combination of mifepristone and misoprostol is reportedly 96-98% effective in ending unborn infants’ lives.
According to the CDC, fewer than 630,000 abortions in the US were performed in clinics in 2020. That is a decrease of 15% compared with 2011, which is at least partly attributed to the growing popularity of the abortion pill and “at-home abortions.”
CDC data shows 80% of surgical abortions were performed at or before the ninth week of pregnancy, and 93% at or before the 13th week of pregnancy, meaning 7% were completed at later stages.
