(ReclaimingAmerica.net) – Serious allegations have emerged against a former football coach, as he faces 24 federal cybercrime charges after stealing private photos and data from over 150,000 college athletes, primarily targeting females at more than 100 universities.
The indictment reveals a massive privacy breach that lasted over eight years while Weiss worked under Jim Harbaugh at elite institutions.
Matt Weiss, who served as Michigan’s quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator until his firing in January 2023, allegedly committed cybercrimes between 2015 and 2023.
Federal prosecutors claim he used sophisticated methods to hack student-athlete databases at over 100 colleges and universities nationwide, compiling personal and medical information on more than 150,000 students.
The accusation showcases particularly disturbing details about Weiss’s alleged pattern of targeting.
“Weiss primarily targeted female college athletes,” according to court documents, with selections based on physical characteristics, school affiliations, and athletic histories.
The charges include unauthorized computer access and aggravated identity theft, which carry potentially serious prison sentences.
Federal investigators discovered Weiss first gained access to accounts of individuals with elevated privileges, such as athletic directors and trainers.
After obtaining confidential information and student passwords, he allegedly broke into over 2,000 athletes’ social media, email, and cloud storage accounts, along with more than 1,300 students’ or alumni accounts.
He aimed to obtain private photographs and videos that were never intended to be shared beyond intimate partners.
Perhaps most disturbing, Weiss allegedly kept detailed notes on individuals, commenting on their bodies and sexual preferences.
This predatory behavior continued for years while he maintained prestigious positions at Stanford, the Baltimore Ravens, and finally Michigan, where he was promoted to co-offensive coordinator in 2022.
Acting U.S. Attorney Julie Beck stated:
“Our office will move aggressively to prosecute computer hacking to protect the private accounts of our citizens. We stand ready with our law enforcement partners to bring those who illegally invade the privacy of others to justice.”
The investigation gained momentum after a Michigan employee reported unauthorized access to university email accounts in January 2023.
The FBI Detroit Cyber Task Force collaborated with the University of Michigan Police Department, leading to Weiss’s termination just two days after the initial report.
Weiss will face serious consequences – up to five years in prison for unauthorized computer access and a mandatory minimum two-year sentence for aggravated identity theft.
While an indictment is not proof of guilt, the extensive nature of the investigation suggests prosecutors have built a substantial case.
Michigan football and university officials have remained conspicuously silent about the scandal.
When contacted, Michigan football spokesman Dave Ablauf would only say, “I would refer you to the FBI regarding this case,” refusing to address potential institutional failures that may have enabled such extensive alleged criminal activity.
