(ReclaimingAmerica.net) – The Jan. 6 Select Committee remains undecided on whether it should issue a criminal referral on former President Donald Trump for his role in allegedly instigating the Capitol riots. Still, Democrats watching the hearings on the sidelines believe the answer is clear.
Rep. Juan Vargas (D-CA) voiced his support for the pursuit of a criminal referral, saying, “I think they should do criminal referrals,” adding that what the committee has “uncovered, there’s a criminal conspiracy there. And having the information, I think they should refer it to the Department of Justice for prosecution. It all starts at the top.”
Vargas isn’t the only one.
Democrats on and off the committee feel the same, believing that Trump is the central figure in the Capitol attack, with those that had doubts putting them to rest following the panel’s first public hearings.
Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.) added his voice to the growing call for Trump’s referral to the DOJ for prosecution, saying, “Given what we’ve heard in the last couple of days, I think there’s enough evidence — or at least questions — that warrant the potential for the DOJ to open a grand jury investigation on the president.”
But the panel revealed this week that it wouldn’t be pursuing a criminal referral, an announcement that thrust the issue into the spotlight.
Following one of the hearings, panel chairman Bennie Thompson told reporters, “that’s not our job,” when discussing the criminal referral, saying, “Our job is to look at the facts and circumstances around Jan. 6, what caused it, and make recommendations after that.”
