(ReclaimingAmerica.net) – What could have been a jolly Christmas turned into a tragedy as four adults in Wakefield, New Hampshire, died due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, also known as the “silent killer.”
The tragic discovery was made after family members alerted the police as they were concerned when the victims did not show up for a Christmas gathering.
New Hampshire State Fire Marshal Sean Toomey stated in a press release, “While the investigation remains active and ongoing, at this time, investigators believe the victims died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.”
“We don’t know what to say about it. It’s so close to us,” neighbor Ed Arcand said.
“You go by that house all the time. Now this happens. We’ll never be able to see it a different way anymore. Every time we drive by, we’re going to be thinking of that,” he added.
The heartbreaking incident occurred as temperatures in Wakefield plummeted to a bone-chilling 13 degrees Fahrenheit on Christmas Day.
This extreme cold likely led to increased use of heating systems, which could have contributed to the deadly buildup of carbon monoxide in the home.
Most alarmingly, the home lacked carbon monoxide detectors – a simple, life-saving device that could have prevented this tragedy.
The victims, two older and two younger adults, have not been identified pending notification of next of kin. Autopsies were scheduled for this week to confirm the exact cause of death.
“It’s a terribly tragic event. It comes in a year we’ve had a tough year in general for carbon monoxide deaths and fire fatalities in our state. I really hope to make it through the holidays without another death,” Fire Marshal Toomey said.
Moreover, this incident is part of a troubling trend in New Hampshire. In October, an elderly couple, David P. Moore Jr. and Janice G. Moore, also perished from carbon monoxide poisoning in Bedford, New Hampshire.
