This agreement includes a critical hostage exchange deal following over a year of violence in Gaza.
Israel and Hamas have reached this pivotal ceasefire and hostage release agreement after prolonged conflict, with the arrangement set to implement beginning Sunday.
The announcement was jointly made by President Biden and Qatar’s Prime Minister, signaling a significant diplomatic breakthrough.
It marks a major step towards reducing the violence in the region.
Qatar, the United States, and Egypt played essential roles in mediating this agreement, involving several days of intense negotiations.
President Biden’s Middle East advisor, Brett McGurk, was crucial in these discussions.
The agreement features a planned ceasefire and exchange of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners in Israel.
Humanitarian aid access to Gaza and the eventual return of displaced Palestinians are significant components of this deal.
The first phase of the agreement focuses on releasing women, children, and hostages over 50 years old, initiating a 42-day ceasefire with Israel.
Following this is the release of remaining male Israeli hostages and a gradual withdrawal of IDF troops from Gaza.
A third phase focuses on the exchange of bodies, Gaza’s reconstruction, and border reopening.
“Today, after many months of intensive diplomacy by the United States, along with Egypt and Qatar, Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire and hostage deal. This deal will halt the fighting in Gaza, surge much needed humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians, and reunite the hostages with their families after more than 15 months in captivity,” Biden announced.
"At long last, I can announce a ceasefire and hostage deal has been reached between Israel and Hamas."

The conflict began after a Hamas attack on October 7, resulting in significant casualties and hostages.
Over 46,000 Palestinians have perished in Israeli airstrikes since.
Euphoric celebrations erupted in Gaza as news spread, despite ongoing airstrikes.
The ceasefire plan also caught the attention of American families whose loved ones are hostages, as they have long struggled for their release.
President-elect Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, contributed to closing the deal in Doha, Qatar.
Trump remarked, “This epic ceasefire agreement could have only happened as a result of our historic victory in November, signaling to the world that my administration would seek peace.”
The agreement awaits formal ratification by Israel’s cabinet, yet officials express guarded optimism about its finalization.
“We are deeply grateful that there is finally an agreement between Israel and Hamas to bring our loved ones—Omer, Edan, Sagui, Itay, Keith, Gad, and Judi—home… We thank President Biden, President-elect Trump, and their teams for their constructive efforts to make this possible,” said the families of the American hostages in Gaza, cited by CBS News.
As the clock ticks towards Sunday’s scheduled ceasefire, the international community closely watches whether this effort will endure.
