Happening Now: McDonald’s Says Goodbye

A McDonald's in Russia

(ReclaimingAmerica.net) – Happening Now: McDonald’s, the legendary American-founded fast-food company with restaurants around the globe, is selling its restaurants in Russia so that it can cease operations there because of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

As the-sun.com notes, “McDonald’s has announced it is selling all of its Russian branches in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“The fast-food giant, which first opened in Russia 30 years ago as the Soviet Union crumbled, has 847 stores in the country, employing some 62,000 people…

“McDonald’s says it will ensure its employees in Russia are paid until the company is sold, and that workers will have future jobs with any potential buyer.”

McDonald’s is not the only American company to call it quits in Russia because of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aggression against Ukraine. Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Starbucks pulled out of Russia almost immediately after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Since then, other companies which have either temporarily halted operations or withdrawn from Russia completely include Apple, Disney, H&M, Ikea, Netflix, PlayStation, Spotify, and TikTok.

Since then, all eyes have been on McDonald’s to see what it would do because leaving Russia will cost the firm billions in revenue.

Today, in a statement McDonald’s said, “The humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, and the precipitating unpredictable operating environment, have led McDonald’s to conclude that continued ownership of the business in Russia is no longer tenable.”
