The former Secretary of State and unsuccessful presidential contender resorted to comparing President Donald Trump’s increasingly favorable polling to the rise of totalitarianism akin to that of Adolf Hitler in Germany.
When asked about Trump’s likely return to the White House during a conversation with co-host Sunny Hostin on ABC’s “The View,” Clinton said, “Oh, I can’t even, I can’t even think that because I think it would be the end of our country as we know it. And I don’t say that lightly.”
She reflected on her failed campaign, recalling the red flags she observed and her dismay at losing to Trump, whom she accused of allegedly fabricating facts and undermining the truth, starting from the claims about the size of his inauguration crowd.
Clinton elaborated on her fears, suggesting that Trump’s behavior in office was only curbed by certain individuals he appointed who eventually stood up to him. She warned that if Trump were to return to power, he would likely surround himself with individuals lacking integrity, who would willingly execute his bidding without question. “Now he is going to if he were ever near the Oval Office again, find people who have no principles, no conscience,” she stated.
The former Secretary of State then drew parallels between historical figures who manipulated their legitimate election into a pathway for authoritarian rule and Trump’s own declarations. Clinton used the example of Hitler’s election to talk about what she deemed as the dangers of electing leaders such as Trump. She claimed that Trump has been transparent about his intentions to undermine democratic norms, suggesting his alleged intentions to imprison opponents and silence the press are clear indications of his inclination toward authoritarianism.
Clinton concluded with a stark reproach, demanding the public to take Trump’s declarations seriously, as she says they signify a profound threat to the rule of law and the core values of the nation.
