(ReclaimingAmerica.net) – According to an Axios report released on Wednesday, a United States Department of Homeland Security memo warns of possible violence should the landmark 1973 decision that gave abortion federal protection be overturned by the United States Supreme Court.
The unclassified memo, dated May 13, states the threats following the leak of the court’s draft opinion could “persist and may increase leading up to and following the issuing of the court’s official ruling.”
The threats in question include those law enforcement agencies have been investigating since the draft opinion leak, some of which have been on social media and called for the Supreme Court building to be attacked and go as far as calling for the murder of Justices and their clerks. Some threats also incite violence against places of worship and abortion clinics.
An ABC News report also quoted the memo stating that “individuals across a broad range of various DVE [domestic violence extremist] ideologies are attempting to justify and inspire attacks against abortion-related targets and ideological opponents at lawful protests.”
Typically, abortion-related violence has been conducted by anti-abortion extremists, something the memo also considers a current threat. Still, the memo highlights that the threat of violence also comes from those who support abortion rights.
Despite the threat of violence, the DHS has also reiterated its commitment to “protecting Americans’ freedom of speech and other civil rights and civil liberties, including the right to peacefully protest.” Noting in its statement that “the mere advocacy of political or social positions, political activism, use of strong rhetoric, or generalized philosophic embrace of violent tactics does not constitute domestic violent extremism or illegal activity and is constitutionally protected.”
