The attack took place when Lt Gen Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Defence Forces, and his aide were near a parked scooter rigged with an explosive device.
The device had the force equivalent to 300g of TNT, causing the fatal blast.
Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case to investigate the murders.
Ukraine’s SBU security service claimed responsibility, labeling Kirillov a “legitimate target” due to his alleged war crimes and use of banned chemical weapons.
The UK had already sanctioned him for his involvement in the alleged use of chemical weapons and spreading disinformation for the Kremlin.
This event has startled Moscow residents, highlighting the close reach of the Ukrainian conflict.
Assassinations of senior officials are rare, especially in Russia’s capital, further intensifying the situation.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, accused the Kyiv regime of not shying away from terrorist methods.
“The Kremlin on Wednesday accused Ukraine of committing a “terrorist attack” by killing a Russian general and his aide in Moscow, in its first comments since the bomb blast,” The Insider Paper reported.
The United States also accused Russia of deploying chemical weapons in Ukraine, although Russia denies these claims.
This adds another layer to the charged atmosphere as the Westerly sanctions tighten on Kirillov, freezing his assets and imposing a travel ban.

“Kirillov was a war criminal and an entirely legitimate target, as he issued orders to use prohibited chemical weapons against Ukrainian troops. Such an inglorious end awaits all those who kill Ukrainians. Retribution for war crimes is inevitable,” a Ukraine intelligence source told ABC News.
Kyiv’s tactics in these assassinations might be seen by some as desperate, while others may argue it is a necessary strategy against a powerful adversary.
