New York City’s Democrat Mayor, Eric Adams, has devised a plan to grant illegal immigrants free college, costing city taxpayers at least $1.2 million annually.

Adams’ plan would provide 12 months of classes, room, and board to 100 illegal immigrants, The New York Post reported, as cited by Fox News.

Under the plan, which could go on indefinitely, the illegals would attend the State University of New York (SUNY) in Sullivan County.

The pilot program for the illegals’ free higher education will be supervised by a new body created by the leftist mayor, the Office of Asylum Seeker Operations (OASO).

OASO coordinates New York City’s resettlement and legal services for the constantly arriving migrants. The office also runs a 24/7 arrival center.

The New York Mayor’s office has not revealed the total cost of Adams’s free higher education plan, so the $1.2 million per year estimate is based on a year’s tuition price at SUNY Sullivan.

“The mayor’s office is giving us money for things like supplies for people to live on, and the dorms and food,” commented Michael Rosen, a spokesman for The Center for Discovery.

The NYC mayor’s plan to benefit the illegal immigrants has been attacked by Republican US Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, who chairs the House Republican Conference.

She accused Adams of “making a permanent welfare system for illegal immigrants in New York State.”

“By spending New Yorkers’ hard-earned taxpayer dollars on college classes for migrants, he is incentivizing and rewarding illegal immigration simply to export the crisis of Democrats’ own making out of New York City,” Stefanik declared.

Since October, Adams has presided over a state of emergency over the migrant crisis in the city, which has “processed” some 50,000 illegal migrants in about one year.

Over 31,000 illegals live in the city’s emergency shelters, costing New York City taxpayers $4.6 million daily.

Last month, a leaked memo from the New York City Office of Management and Budget disclosed that NYC would spend $4.2 billion on migrants and asylum seekers through June 30, 2023, and the 2024 fiscal year’s end.

A blueprint for tackling the migrant crisis that Adams unveiled this week provides for job training and resettlement outside the city but also claims the city wouldn’t be able to handle the migrant influx long-term.

The NYC mayor’s “blueprint to address New York City’s response to the asylum seeker crisis” is entitled “The Road Forward.”

“[New York City is] in the early stage of being able to assist asylum seekers in relocating to their preferred city of choice… Ultimately, New York City isn’t equipped to meet the complex needs of asylum seekers given their current rapid rate of arrival,” the blueprint says.

“For relocation within New York State, the recently released state budget includes $25 million to assist in the resettlement of certain families,” the document adds.

Meanwhile, Adams’s office said the city “will continue to advocate for the state and federal governments to provide additional financial and operational support” to manage better the illegal immigration crisis.
