Astellas Pharma’s nationwide recall of two critical immunosuppressant drugs is a disturbing development highlighting the ongoing pharmaceutical quality control crisis.
The recall affects specific lots of Prograf and Astagraf XL, medications vital for preventing organ rejection in transplant patients.
The affected medications, Prograf and Astagraf XL are used after heart, liver, kidney, and lung transplants.
The recall specifically targets Prograf 0.5 mg capsules from Lot No. 0E3353D and Astagraf XL 0.5 mg capsules from Lot No. 0R3092A. Both lots were set to expire in March 2026 but now potentially threaten patients’ lives.
Moreover, Astellas’ risk statement on its recall notice stated:
“In the case of life sustaining organ transplants such as a heart transplant (for which there is no permanent substitute such as hemodialysis in the case of a failed kidney transplant) if the transplant fails, the consequences of rejection initiated by ingesting empty capsules may be fatal”
