(ReclaimingAmerica.net) – Supporting his efforts to Make America Great Again, a growing number of university professors are backing a petition to rally academics in support of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential election.
George Mason University Professor Daniel Klein and Assumption University Professor Emeritus of Political Science Daniel Mahoney spearheaded the initiative.
Their statement urged scholars to support the GOP candidate, while 51 professors had signed the petition. The signees included emeritus and active scholars from a mix of private and public institutions, spanning well-known universities and state schools.
Named “Lesser Evil,” the petition stresses the importance of individual liberty, criticizes big government, and upholds the Declaration of Independence’s ideal of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” as the “chief aims of good governance.”
Klein argued that Republicans are naturally more inclined to resist centralized power, making them the “lesser evil” in this election.
“Except for a few odd places and a very few odd units on a few campuses, academia is a leftist apparatus. Academia continues to get worse,” Klein said. He estimates that “it is less than 10 percent of professors who think R > D.”
Even though this petition emerged in the context of growing concerns about ideological diversity in higher education, reports show that university faculties tend to lean heavily Democratic.
Moreover, to emphasize their point, the professors included a graphic on the petition’s website declaring, “Democrats bad, Republicans less bad,” highlighting the two parties’ positions on issues like taxes, religious liberty, censorship, asset forfeiture, and energy policy.
If the petition convinces professors to reconsider their political positions, it could create a friendlier environment for right-leaning students and faculty. However, Klein remains skeptical.
Similar to Klein, Other academics, such as Brooklyn College Professor Mitchell Langbert, have joined him in this effort.
In his view, “Republicans are the lesser of two evils. They remain philosophically committed to liberalism and the rule of law.”
However, Langbert acknowledged that “neither party has embraced the liberal views that propelled the United States, and earlier Great Britain and Germany, to world leadership.”
