(ReclaimingAmerica.net) – In a move that has cheered the pro-life movement and outraged pro-abortion activists, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) stated that a national abortion ban is a possibility if the United States Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade when it issues its final decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
The Dobbs decision could come any day between now and the end of the Supreme Court’s term on June 30th.
Asked if a national abortion ban is “worthy of debate” during an interview with USA Today, McConnell said, “If the leaked opinion became the final opinion, legislative bodies — not only at the state level but at the federal level — certainly could legislate in that area.”
McConnell added, “And if this were the final decision, that was the point that it should be resolved one way or another in the legislative process. So yeah, it’s possible.”
Still, another portion of McConnell’s remarks to USA Today calls into doubt how far McConnell is willing to go procedurally to legislate a national ban in Congress if the GOP regains control of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate as expected in November.
McConnell indicated that he would not be willing as Senate Majority Leader to cast aside the filibuster for any reason, making it highly doubtful that such a measure would reach the 60-vote threshold needed to pass the upper chamber.
“No carve out of the filibuster — period,” the Republican leader said. “For any subject.”
