(ReclaimingAmerica.net) – As part of an extreme liberal decision, Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Peter Welch (D-VT) have proposed a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on Supreme Court Justices.
This brazen attempt to undermine the foundations of the judicial system threatens the integrity of the highest court in the country.
The proposed amendment, introduced as a joint resolution, would establish 18-year nonrenewable terms for new Supreme Court Justices.
Under this scheme, a new Justice would be appointed every two years, drastically altering the Court’s composition and potentially its rulings on critical issues.
While proponents asserted this change would “restore confidence” in the Court’s impartiality, it is clear that this is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to pack the Court with liberal justices who will rubber-stamp the left’s radical agenda.
By creating regular vacancies, this amendment would give presidents – particularly those on the left – more opportunities to appoint activist judges who legislate from the bench.
I’m proud to introduce legislation with @SenPeterWelch that would establish 18-year term limits for Justices of the United States Supreme Court. MORE: https://t.co/fSzh606l4a

Senator Manchin, who is retiring at the end of the year, attempted to justify this assault on America’s judiciary by stating:
“The current lifetime appointment structure is broken and fuels polarizing confirmation battles and political posturing that has eroded public confidence in the highest court in our land.”
However, this ignores the fact that lifetime appointments were specifically designed by the Founding Fathers to insulate the Court from political pressures and preserve its independence.
On the other hand, Senator Welch said:
“Taking action to restore public trust in our nation’s most powerful Court is as urgent as it is necessary. Setting term limits for Supreme Court Justices will cut down on political gamesmanship and is commonsense reform supported by a majority of Americans. I’m proud to lead this effort with Senator Manchin to restore Americans’ faith in our judicial system.”
Welch’s claim that this reform is “supported by a majority of Americans” is misleading at best. While some polls suggested public support for term limits, these surveys often failed to explain the potential consequences of such a drastic change.
Furthermore, the amendment faces significant hurdles, requiring a two-thirds majority in Congress and ratification by three-fourths of the states.
Nevertheless, the mere introduction of this proposal sets a dangerous precedent and opens the door to further attempts to manipulate our judicial system for political gain.
I'm proposing a constitutional amendment to put term limits on the Supreme Court. It will:
—Make the confirmation process less divisive.
—Give more of a voice to the American people.
—Provide presidents the opportunity to nominate two justices each term to the Court.— Senator Peter Welch (@SenPeterWelch) December 9, 2024
