(ReclaimingAmerica.net) – Joe Biden has found an unlikely defender as GOP US Senator Rand Paul warned fellow Republicans against the “trap” of launching an impeachment inquiry against the Democrat president.
Paul’s comments came after earlier this week, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) suggested that an impeachment procedure against the president might be in order based on the mounting revelations about the Biden family’s murky foreign business dealings.
“It’s not good for the republic to keep impeaching presidents and indicting presidents. All this stuff is destructive,” Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) reacted in an interview with Fox Business Network.
Former President Donald Trump, the favorite for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, was impeached by the House twice but was acquitted by the Senate both times. He was recently slapped with three indictments.
While McCarthy made it clear House Republicans hadn’t decided to impeach Biden yet, Paul preemptively criticized the idea.
“The other side [Democrats] says, ‘Oh they want to, they’re for preserving democracy.’ They’re pitting everyone against each other and they’re destroying the fabric of our republic, so I think we have to be careful not to fall into the same trap,” the Kentucky senator said.
Other Republican legislators have also criticized the idea of a Biden impeachment inquiry, The Hill reports.
Those include US Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO), who said McCarthy’s comments were “impeachment theater” and a distraction from budget talks.
“No one is seriously talking about impeachment,” another GOP lawmaker, Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina, told reporters.
According to the report, a White House statement blasted the House Speaker’s comments.
“[The impeachment inquiry remarks are] a ridiculous, baseless stunt, intended to attack the President at a time when House Republicans should instead be joining the President to focus on the important issues facing the American people,” the statement said.
In the same interview suggesting Biden might be impeached, McCarthy declared the president had been using the “weaponization of government to benefit his family and deny Congress the ability to have oversight.”
The results from a Morning Consult poll from June 22-24 show that 30% of registered US voters think Congress should investigate if Biden should be impeached as its “top priority.”
The view was shared by 55% of registered Republican voters, 11% of Democrats, and 24% of independents.
