Reports of rear wheel lock-ups amidst reports of general transmission failure necessitate a proactive recall to avert dangerous driving conditions.
GM is recalling vehicles from the 2020 to 2022 model years, including Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and various HD models, along with Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade diesel models from 2021.
These vehicles contain either a 6.6-liter L5P Duramax V8 with an Allison-branded 10L 1000 transmission or a 3.0-liter LM2 Duramax inline-six with a 10L 80 transmission.
These components are at the core of the problem, reports KDKA.
The fault lies within the transmission control valve, where premature wear triggers pressure loss, leading to rough shifts and critical rear-wheel lock-up during downshifts from eighth gear.
This issue has emerged in 1,888 field reports, including 11 incidents where vehicles veered off the road and resulted in three minor injuries.
To address the situation, GM will provide a software update that monitors valve wear, alerts when the wear reaches a threshold, and limits the transmission to fifth gear when necessary.
Notifications for affected owners will commence on December 9, 2024, and run through February 28, 2025.
With a report of at least one GMC Sierra locking up while towing, it’s essential GM tackles this urgently.
GM’s service centers are prepared to perform necessary repairs free of charge while a stop-sale order is in place for affected models.
Owners will receive compensation for out-of-pocket repairs that surface due to this defect. Despite GM’s initiative, replacing transmission valves directly still isn’t part of the recall.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identifies the recall as 24V-797.
Meanwhile, GM’s recall, filed under N242454440, seeks to restore confidence and prevent any further incidents or injuries.
