(ReclaimingAmerica.net) – All candidates for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination will be required to sign a support pledge to back the eventual nominee, Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has announced.
In an interview for the CNN program “State of the Union,” the RNC chief said pledging to support whoever is selected as the nominee would be a precondition for participating in GOP primary debates.
“Will candidates be required to sign a pledge saying they will support whoever becomes the nominee to get on that debate stage?” CNN anchor Dana Bash asked McDaniel.
“We haven’t put the criteria out, but I expect a pledge will be part of it. It was part of 2016, I think it’s kind of a no-brainer, right?” the top Republican added.
“If you’re going to be on the Republican National Committee Debate stage, asking voters to support you, you should say, ‘I’m going to support the voters and who they choose as the nominee.’ As RNC Chair, if I said I wouldn’t support the Republican nominee, I would be removed from office,” McDaniel elaborated.
Last month, McDaniel, the niece of US Senator Mitt Romney, was reelected for a fourth term as head of the Republican National Committee. She thus became the longest-serving RNC head since the Civil War.
In her interview, the Republican National Committee chairwoman said, “there should be a threshold” for candidates to be allowed in the GOP primary debates.
“You want to make sure you have people on the debate stage who are running for president. We don’t want people who are running for book deals, or media contracts, or Cabinet positions,” she said.
Three candidacies for the 2024 GOP nomination have already been announced: former President Donald Trump, former US Ambassador and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.
Other likely candidates are Florida’s Governor, Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and US Senator Tim Scott (R-SC).
A Trump campaign spokesperson reacted to Ronna McDaniel’s comments about a required support pledge by saying the former president would agree because he was the presumed nominee.
“President Trump will support the Republican nominee because it will be him,” the spokesperson said.
Earlier this month, Trump answered conditionally in an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt when asked whether he would back the GOP presidential nominee if that weren’t him.
“It would depend. It would have to depend on who the nominee was,” Trump reacted.
In her CNN interview, the RNC head urged Republicans to focus on defeating the Democrats.
“We can’t be attacking each other so much that we lose sight of: We have to beat the Democrats. We have to beat Joe Biden in 2024. And we may have divisive primaries and differences of opinions, but in the end, we have to settle those to win the big picture, which is governing our country and doing right by the American people,” McDaniel declared.
