VIDEO: AOC Calls on Biden To Ignore Judge’s Abortion Pill Ruling

( – Prominent Democrats led by U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez voiced strong disapproval of a federal judge’s decision to suspend the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) authorization of the abortion-inducing drug mifepristone and have urged the White House to disregard the ruling.

In a Friday night appearance on CNN, Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, stated, “I believe that the Biden administration should ignore this ruling.”

She proceeded to criticize “deeply partisan” judges for their involvement in the “unprecedented and dramatic erosion of the legitimacy of the courts” and asserted that skepticism surrounding mifepristone was “unfounded.”

Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the fact that the enforcement of a ruling is ultimately dependent on the administration’s choice to do so.

Senator Ron Wyden (D., OR) shared similar concerns about the implications of the ruling made by Matthew Kacsmaryk, a Trump-appointed U.S. district judge based in Texas.

In a tweet, Wyden called on President Biden to disregard the ruling and maintain accessibility to mifepristone for women across the country.

In a 67-page opinion published Friday night, Judge Kacsmaryk suspended the FDA’s authorization of mifepristone, granted in 2000.

Kacsmaryk cited flawed reasoning and inadequate supporting studies as grounds for the suspension, asserting that the FDA had violated its statutory duty by acquiescing to its legitimate safety concerns.

However, the injunction did not completely withdraw or suspend the federal agency’s approval of the abortion drug, despite objections from pro-life groups.

The case originates from a lawsuit filed in November by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) on behalf of the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine and four pro-life doctors.

The plaintiffs argue that the FDA never possessed the authority to approve the chemical abortion regimen, first developed in France in the 1980s and that the FDA had inadequately studied the safety of the procedure and obstructed doctors from challenging its use for nearly two decades.

Following the release of the ruling, Democratic backlash was swift.

Attorney General Merrick Garland issued a statement “strongly disagreeing” with the decision and announced the Justice Department’s intent to appeal the ruling and seek a stay pending appeal.

Garland reiterated the department’s commitment to defending the FDA’s longstanding determination that mifepristone is safe and effective.

Currently, over half of all abortions in the U.S. are performed using chemical abortion pills.
