In his statement, which was in response to a question by a reporter, Biden seemingly was saying that the United States of America will honor its long-standing commitment to defend Taiwan militarily against China if China attacks or invades Taiwan.
However, that commitment, based on the Taiwan Relations Act — an act of Congress passed n 1979 — has always been ambiguous about whether the United States would be obligated to commit military personnel to defend Taiwan.
During his recent overseas trip, a reporter asked Biden: “Very quickly, you didn’t want to get involved in the Ukraine conflict militarily for obvious reasons. Are you willing to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan if it comes to that?”
Biden responded: “Yes.”
Reporter: “You are?”
Biden: “That’s the commitment we made.”
