The pair, accused of orchestrating spy operations against the United States, allegedly sought to recruit U.S. service members as assets.

This revelation exposes a critical breach in national security and raises significant concerns about foreign intelligence threats.

The arrests of Yuance Chen and Liren “Ryan” Lai unfolded in Portland, Oregon, and Houston, Texas, marking a coordinated FBI operation.

According to the Justice Department, these individuals operated covertly for the PRC’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) without proper notification to the Attorney General.

The duo is accused of conducting various intelligence activities, including managing clandestine payments and seeking to recruit U.S. Navy personnel by photographing sensitive bulletins.

The FBI investigation benefitted from the collaboration of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), emphasizing the importance of joint efforts in counterintelligence.

Evidence suggests a network of espionage that aimed to compromise national security through access to military information.

The operation’s success serves as a testament to the resolve of American law enforcement agencies to counter such threats.

The case, filed in San Francisco federal court, illustrates ongoing attempts by China to gain an unlawful foothold in U.S. military operations.

The defendants supposedly structured their espionage scheme to include the payment of cash via dead drops, anticipating anonymity and protection.

Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, “This case underscores the Chinese government’s sustained and aggressive effort to infiltrate our military and undermine our national security from within.”

The Justice Department appears determined to uncover and address such covert activities decisively.

Further illustrating the danger, FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized their vigilance, saying, “The FBI arrested two Chinese nationals who were allegedly attempting to recruit U.S. military service members on behalf of the PRC.”

This statement aligns with the broader accusations of the Chinese Communist Party’s espionage practices.

Moreover, the Chinese Embassy in Washington has denied these charges, blaming a lack of evidence and redirecting accusations toward U.S. espionage on China.

Both individuals face serious charges that, if proven, could result in up to 10 years in prison and hefty fines.

The case underscores the ongoing risks posed by foreign intelligence services to U.S. sovereignty.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Export Control Section are leading the prosecution.

“The FBI will continue to vigilantly defend the homeland from China’s pervasive attempts to infiltrate our borders,” said FBI Director Kash Patel.
