Paul Stephenson’s hubris and disregard for life have finally caught up with him.

The 57-year-old from Castle Rock, Colorado, will spend his drinking days behind bars for a heinous act of drunk driving.

On August 4, 2024, at a local 7-Eleven gas station, Stephenson’s intoxication led to a high-speed collision involving Air Force Lt. Col. Matt Anderson, killing him and endangering his children.

Anderson was simply fueling up after a fun day at the Douglas County Fair.

That night, Stephenson imbibed a bottle of Fireball whiskey and two beers, driving with a blood alcohol level 2.5 times over the legal limit.

This incident marked his third DUI conviction, underscoring a troubling pattern of unlawful and dangerous behavior.

His prior convictions, compounded by speeding violations, eliminated any leeway for leniency.

The severity of his actions demanded a harsh penalty, and the district attorney aptly charged him with first-degree murder.

Video footage reveals the horror, as Stephenson’s truck crashes into the gas pumps, instigating a chain reaction that led to the Anderson family’s plight.

This was no mere accident but a deliberate act of negligence with extreme consequences.

Lieutenant Colonel Anderson, not only a decorated serviceman but also a dedicated father, leaves behind a grieving wife and four traumatized children.

“Matt Anderson served his country valiantly, was a college football player. He was a dad and he was a husband. That is the family that is left behind. He didn’t leave them behind, he was taken from them,” said 23rd Judicial District Attorney Nate Marsh.

The jury delivered a verdict that mirrored the severity of Stephenson’s disregard for life – a life sentence plus 92 years without parole for charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and child abuse.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Nate Marsh encapsulated the public sentiment and legal stance, stating, “The defendant cared only about himself and showed a complete disregard for the value of human life.”

“This is a good sentence. This is a good sentence because we’re here because the defendant did not care. He didn’t care whose life he took. He didn’t care who he got injured. He didn’t care what was left behind. But luckily for all of us, what was left behind was an incredibly strong family,” Marsh said further.

Stephenson displayed neither remorse nor accountability, a stance that prompted District Court Judge Victoria Klingensmith to highlight his lack of empathy and make the sentencing decision.

Despite his defense attorney’s attempt to mitigate the charges with a guilty plea to vehicular homicide, the court maintained the charge of extreme indifference murder.

Anderson’s father, Wayne Anderson, locally advocated for the ruling as a deterrent to future DUI offenders, emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement against drunk driving.

Matt Anderson embodied the spirit of a true American patriot. His untimely death is a grim reminder of the dangers of alcohol-fueled chaos.

While Paul Stephenson is no longer a threat to society, the unwavering support for Anderson’s family from the community serves as a beacon of hope amidst the darkness.
