What began as a protest against ICE turned violent, leading to a riot declaration as demonstrators attacked the facility. Federal enforcement had to act decisively to regain control.
The protest at Portland’s ICE facility erupted into violence late Saturday afternoon as activists, equipped with fireworks and rock projectiles, stormed the building.
Police quickly declared a riot, enforcing the law against the masked protesters determined to breach federal grounds.
As tensions escalated, federal officers responded with smoke, tear gas, and less-lethal rounds to disperse the aggressive crowd.
The confrontation unfolded after thousands initially gathered peacefully for “No Kings” protests across Portland.
However, smaller groups split off, specifically targeting the ICE office in the South Waterfront area.
Their actions included the formation of an impromptu shield wall and the use of a stop sign to break through the building’s glass door.
Amid the chaos, federal law enforcement managed to secure the facility, though not without injuries.
At least four officers were injured in the assault, underscoring the violent intent of those rioters who sought to disrupt federal operations.
The situation was further exacerbated by tensions from recent protests in Los Angeles, suggesting a coordinated effort to oppose ICE actions nationwide.
“We will NOT be deterred by rioters’ intimidation and threats. ICE immigration enforcement will only ramp up,” stated the Department of Homeland Security.
Efforts by the Portland Police Bureau included the deployment of bicycle police and the Rapid Response Team, though their interactions remained limited.
Meanwhile, federal officers maintained a strong presence, establishing a perimeter and effectively dispersing the intruders after breaches were made.
A medical event inside the facility required emergency personnel intervention, adding further strain to the chaotic scene.
The Department of Homeland Security condemned the violence, underscoring its stance that law enforcement will not yield to intimidation.
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin promised increased enforcement in response to the personal information of ICE agents being shared publicly, a tactic meant to intimidate and expose those upholding the law.
