The potent earthquake rocked the Asian island, claiming at least nine lives and injuring over 800 people. The quake wreaked chaos on numerous buildings and sparked tsunami alerts as far as Japan and the Philippines, though they were later canceled, and life began to return to normal in affected areas.

Officials labeled it the most powerful earthquake to strike the island in many years and warned of potential aftershocks in the coming days.

The Director of Taipei’s Central Weather Administration’s Seismology Center Wu Chien-fu remarked, “The earthquake is close to land and it’s shallow. It’s felt all over Taiwan and offshore islands.”

Despite its seismic vulnerability, Taiwan’s severe building codes and widespread disaster readiness helped alleviate the impact of the quake, which occurred near the convergence of two tectonic plates.

The quake, with a magnitude of 7.4, struck just before 8:00 am local time, with the epicenter situated 18 kilometers south of Taiwan’s Hualien City, at a depth of 34.8 kilometers.

Tragically, some rocks crushed three individuals during an early-morning hike, while others died in car accidents and a mining incident. The National Fire Agency reported 882 injuries, predominantly in Hualien County.

Meanwhile, witnesses across the country captured footage of buildings swaying violently and structural damage. One resident of Hualien recounted, “It was shaking violently, the paintings on the wall, my TV and liquor cabinet fell,”

In Hualien and other places, multi-story buildings tilted precariously, and a warehouse in New Taipei City collapsed. More than 50 survivors were rescued from the rubble of a collapsed structure. The tragedy also caused landslides that severed transportation links, trapping an estimated 120 people in vehicles.

President-elect Lai Ching-te urged swift and coordinated rescue operations, with President Tsai Ing-wen pledging military support.

Furthermore, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company briefly paused fabrication at some plants and construction work was suspended at new plant sites.

Though earthquakes are frequent in the region, the severity of their impact varies based on factors such as depth and location of the epicenter.
